DescriptionThe carte de visite was a type of small photograph mounted on a thick paper card, usually the size of a calling card, making it easily tradeable among friends and visitors. It was popular through the 1860's, after which it was supplanted by the larger cabinet card.
Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (1/14/1836~12/4/1881) was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery on May 6, 1861. On August 1st, 1861, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th regiment, New York State Volunteers Cavalry, also known as the Harris Light Cavalry. He became Brigadier General on June 13, 1863, and was brevetted Major General on Jan 12, '65. He reached the rank of Major General on June 18, '65, before he resigned on Jan 1, '66.
His commands included the 3rd Cavalry Division of the Army of the Potomac and the Cavalry Corps of the Army of Tennessee.
After the war, he served for a period as the United States Minister to Chile, and ran (unsuccessfully) for the U.S. House of Representatives.
