Description1. Declaration of intent to naturalize of my great grandfather, Passaic County, July 28, 1892. Franz Xaver Niessen (1840-1902) was born in München-Gladbach in the Rhineland (Kingdom of Prussia) and emigrated about 1891 (we’ve not found him on a passenger manifest), living with his wife and eight children in Paterson for about three years before they all moved to Philadelphia, where he died of cancer. He was a master dyer and may have worked in one of Paterson’s textile mills. According to oral tradition he only found work there as an elevator operator, though he had a hotel-restaurant for awhile in Philadelphia.
