DescriptionThis is volume II of the registry of New Jersey soldiers in the War of the Rebellion, the United States Civil War, by William S. Stryker. This volume continues the list and finishes with a report of the burial records of these men in cemeteries across many states. Stryker, newly appointed Adjutant General of New Jersey in 1867, was asked by Governor Marcus L. Ward to prepare an Official Register of the officers and men of New Jersey in the "War of Rebellion," the Civil War, 1861-1865. Stryker undertook the task with great scrutiny of records; cross-referencing and proof-reading the lists repeatedly. A request for publication and funding was passed by the State legislature in 1871. Stryker submitted the Registry to Governmor Joseph D. Bedle in 1876. The preface by Stryker provides an outline of how the troops were enrolled and a statement on the accuracy of information on the burial of soldiers within the state. The first volume contains lists of generals and other staff officers followed by 1st Regiment Militia through the 32nd Regiment Militia. The second volume contains the 33rd Regiment through the 40th plus Batteries A-E, Misc. Organizations of calvary and infantry from Pennsylvannia, and the Verteran Reserve Corps of infantry.
