DescriptionThe Burnt Mill schoolhouse in the spring of 1919. Pupils pictured are, in the far row of desk from left to right: Emma Walsh, Hazel Hatmen, Dora Walsh, Elsie Teischer, Bill Teischer, Billy Milnor, Myrtle Hendershot, Edna Greene, Margaret Nevius, and Gertrude Hendershot. In the near row of desks, left to right are: Margaret Osborne, Elmer Reger, Simon Nevius, Billy Cole, Edward Teischer, John Nevius, and Roy Ban Derveer.

The teacher was Irva Gallaway Ten Eyck, who came to New Jersey from West Virginia. (Her brother Haas Gallaway founded the Gallaway Funeral Home in Bernardsville). Miss Gallaway began teaching at Burnt Mill in 1918. in 1919 she married Abram Ten Eyck, one of the mill operators. For two years they boarded with with Otto Eberbach, the other mill operator, who owned the house next to the mill. Mrs. Eberbach was Elinor Barker.

In 1927 when the mill closed Abe Ten Eyck went to work for the Somerset Country Road Department, and the Ten Eycks bought the first house west of Lamington Church where they lived the rest of their lives.

Mr. Ten Eyck served on the Bedminster Township Committee 1948-1964, and was mayor 1954-1964. Mrs. Ten Eyck was Township Treasurer 1957-1975. Mr. Ten Eyck died in 1976, and Mrs. Ten Eyck in 1977. Both are buried in the Ten Eyck section of the North Branch cemetery.
