DescriptionBlack and white photo postcard of Phoenix Engine No. 3.
In 1798, Phoenix Engine Company No. 3 was organized on Little Albany Street. Local citizens financed the purchase of three hand engines and two steam engines. Although the company disbanded in 1914, the building stood until about 1978. An early hand engine was a six-cylinder unit, the largest in the city. This gave way to a steamer in 1865, which was in service until 1902.
The company had four houses: first on Little Burnet Street, second at the corner of Neilson and Bayard Streets, third on Liberty Street, in old City Hall, and fourth on Dennis Street.
