DescriptionDuring the Cold War Fallout Shelters were constructed in urban areas as part of a civil defense effort to protect citizens from radioactive debris ("fallout") in the event of a nuclear war. While most of these shelters no longer exist, signs indicating their one-time locations still dot the urban landscape. This particular sign is on an apartment building on Sip Avenue on the southern border of Journal Square.
