DescriptionGeorge H. Wanton was one of the first African Americans to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. After the Spanish-American War was declared, he joined the U.S. Calvary. He was dispatched to Cuba, which was invaded by a force of 15,000. Wanton with two soldiers volunteered to free a group of 16 of his comrades. He was discharged as a master sergeant. At the time of his enlistment, he was a coachman residing at 137 16th Avenue. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery
