DescriptionThis quilt was inspired by the notion of justice within the courts. The Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Gye Nyame which is the focal point of this quilt, means “except for God,” Gye Nyame is at the center of the steps of justice leading into the courthouse. I selected the color blue because it is often associated with trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, faith, and truth. I hand- stamped the blue batik in Ghana in 2014. This quilt symbolizes my hope that the disproportionate numbers of young men of African descent in America entangled in our legal system can find faith and confidence in themselves that their lives matter. The quilting is a series of interlocking “G’s” representing Gye Nyame, God, and Gikandi.
