DescriptionThe Second Reformed Dutch Church, located on the corner of Ferry and McWhorster Streets, was built in 1848. Designed by architect William Kirk the Catholic Church eventually assumed control of the building and renamed it Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In 1978 it became a cultural center. Now restored, it is the Centro Evangelistico da Igreja Assembleia de Deus.
NoteThe plaque reads: This building served many people as a source of spiritual strength. The church was contructed in 1848. Designed by architect, William H. Kirk, it was initially named the Second Reformed Dutch Church. The German immigrants of the Ironbound area were the first residents to benefit from the services held here. Later, as the Italian population grew, the church was purchased by the Newark Catholic Archdiocese and renamed Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The church was closed in 1972 and remained vacant until August 1978 when the Ironbound Educational and Cultural Center secured a rental with an option to buy the church and the former rectory buildings. The IECC temporarily moved into the main level of the church. On February 10, 1981 the IECC purchased the church and the rectory which had been listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Later in 1984 the church and rectory buildings were catalogued as an Historical site by the State of New Jersey.
