DescriptionWilliam Elliot Griffis graduated from Rutgers College in 1869. During his time at Rutgers, he tutored some of the first Japanese students to come to the United States. In 1871, he accepted a job organizing education and teaching natural sciences in Fukui, Japan. Upon his return, he became one of the foremost scholars of Japan working in the United States, and published the paramount English language work on Japan, "The Mikado's Empire." This photograph is his Rutgers College graduation portrait.
