DescriptionThis undated photograph shows the roundhouse at the lake. This building is on the north side of the Egg Harbor City Lake, in Egg Harbor City, NJ. This was a wooden structure with cedar-shake roof and siding. A large floor was used for dancing or roller-skating. One of the builders was Albert Shelhorn, grandfather of Margie Shelhorn Hesse. Sadly this and other buildings at the lake were burned by vandals. It is suspected that there was a connection with labor unrest at the construction of the additon to Hamilton Hall which also suffered vandalism at the same time in 1962. The city replaced this building with a square, open-air block pavilion which remains today.
There are five unidentified women sitting on what appears to be a wall. Judging from the white uniforms, the women may be nursing staff at the sanitarium owned by Dr. Charles Smith. Dr. Smith also owned property at the lake.
