DescriptionTadanari Matsudaira came to Rutgers College in 1875 from a Japanese noble family. His education was funded by his wealthy father, who had ambitions for him to be appointed to a high position in the Japanese government. He graduated from Rutgers College in June of 1879 with a degree in the sciences. Soon after, he married the daughter of William Sampson, a New Brunswick bookseller. Opting to stay in America against his father's will, he later became the city engineer of Bradford, Pennsylvania, the first man of his nationality to be chosen for civil office in the United States. He also took a position as assistant engineer of the Manhattan Elevated Railroad Company, and later as chief engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming and Montana.
