Originally this building was built and operated as the "Guesthouse of the Golden Ox" by the owner of the city's first butcher shop, George Obergfell. It was later bought by his daughter and son-in-law William Zimmer who renamed it the American Hotel.
It was located on the western corner of Philadelphia Avenue and the White Horse Pike. An Egg Harbor City, NJ postal stamp indicates 03 May 1913.
