DescriptionThis photograph, featured in the July 14, 1955 edition of The News of Egg Harbor City, shows the firemen's division that marched in the Military and Firemen's Parade. The Military and Firemen's parade was the first of two grand parades scheduled for the Egg Harbor City Centennial celebration.
The Military and Firemen's Parade was, to date, the largest parade ever seen in Egg Harbor City. As noted in a July 14, 1955 article, "there were 82 pieces of fire equipment in the parade entered by 38 fire companies coming from all sections of Southern New Jersey." An earlier report, dated July 7, noted that the parade route from the high school to the athletic field was expected to be "more than two hours in passing any one point."
Walter Ford, Fire Chief of Longport and past president of the County Firemen, had the honor of heading the firemen's division. Chief William Keiser, of the Egg Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, and Henry Heitz, secretary of the Atlantic County Firemen's Association, also marched for local firefighters during the Monday night parade.
A decorated fire truck, dubbed "the local hook and ladder truck" in The News, is clearly visible behind the marchers. This photograph was taken July 11, 1955.
