DescriptionOverflow spillway between the upper and middle raceway, circa 1976. Pierre L'Enfant started the raceway system in 1793, as superintendent of the S.U.M. He was replaced by Peter Colt. The raceway would provide the first mill with waterpower in the spring of 1794. The raceway system would undergo several changes from 1793 to 1838. It would serve as a power source for the S.U.M. until 1914, when the hydroelectric plant was activated. Photographer Michael Spozarsky.
