NAS - Rutgers Language and Orientation Program for Hungarian Scholars, First Week - January 20-24, 1957. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/T3KW5DJC
DescriptionAfter the Soviets suppressed the Revolution in Hungary in 1956, approximately 200,000 Hungarians fled the country. Many Hungarian refugees came to New Jersey, some of whom were housed at Camp Kilmer, a military post near New Brunswick. Many members of the nearby Rutgers University community worked to help the refugees. This report discusses the frist week of a National Academy of Science (NAS) - Rutgers sponsored orientation program that provided English language instruction and an introduction to American life. Hungarian attendees were treated to trips in New York City, coupon books for food, and clothing. The descriptions include the techniques professors used to teach English language skills and to illustrate American life through music, movies, and shows.
