DescriptionThese are pages from a survey conducted by the Interracial Committee of the New Jersey Conference of Social Work and the New Jersey Department of Institutions and Agencies during the summer and fall months of 1931. The survey was concerning the living conditions of African Americans in Trenton. Presented in this government document are living conditions of individual African American families, more than half of which had migrated from Southern states. The typical conditions within the African American community of Trenton included a general lack of the modern facilities such as in-door plumbing, a lack of home ownership, and severe overcrowding within the oldest homes of the central areas and the outskirts of Trenton. There is also a detailed description of what unfortunate labor positions the subjects have occupied and the salaries they have had.
