Surrounded by a throng of onlookers, the Bothers of the Brush are assembled outside of the firehouse (Municipal Court building) and nearby A&P. Many of the men wear old-fashioned hats in honor of the Centennial. Finalists stand behind the judges, center.
According to an article in the July 14, 1955 edition of The News, contestants would be divided into different categories. Six prizes were to be awarded.
The winners of the Brothers of the Brush contest were as follows: Walter Kendall, best goatee; Robert E. Hagelin, best full beard; Robert M. Hagelin, best mutton chop; George Zimmer, best trimmed beard. As noted in the July 21, 1955 edition of The News, Robert E. Hagelin also won the grand award, a Ronson electric shaver.
The judges of the Brothers of the Brush contest included J. William Weisbecker, Centennial Corporation president; Mayor George Francis, of Linwood; Mayor Fred Chapman, of Somers Point; and Mayor Joseph Venuti, of Mays Landing.
