DescriptionThis photograph, part of the Egg Harbor City Centennial Celebration, depicts the many men of the Order of the Brush. In keeping with Brush rules, the men proudly display various stages of beard growth.
Also known as Brothers of the Brush, the men are posed outside of the firehouse (Municipal Court building). Patriotic flags and pennants, possibly used to celebrate the centennial, hang from the firehouse as well as from the window of the nearby A&P.
The photograph appeared in the July 21st edition of The News. According to the newspaper, this image was taken in celebration of the judging of the Brothers of the Brush contest on July 16, 1955.
The judges of this competition, Mayor Fred Chapman, of Somers Point, J. William Weisbecker, Centennial corporation president, and Mayor Joseph Venuti, are kneeling. Mayor George Francis, of Linwood, also judged the Brothers of the Brush, but was not present when this picture was taken.
It is interesting to note that, although some of the men in this picture are attired in long-sleeved shirts, the temperature was a stifling 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
