DescriptionInterior shot of fireplace and furnishings of a house that was occupied by the same Dutch family from 1699 to 1926. It is believed to have been built by Nicholas Varleth (or Varlett) and/or Balthazar Bayard in 1664, shortly after the founding of the village of Bergen where it stood at the corner of Bergen Avenue and Newkirk Street until it was moved to Westfield, N.J. in 1926. In 1699 it was purchased by Jan Arianse Sip and occupied by his descendants for over 200 years.
During October, 1910 Jersey City celebrated the 250th Anniversary of its founding as the town of Bergen by the Dutch in 1660. This is one of a series of commemorative postcards, many attributed to "Bergen Camera Exchange," depicting historic scenes and places.
