DescriptionI really wanted to make a feathered star and this quilt is my first. It is also my first attempt at paper-piecing which I used to create the star. The Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Sankofa is the focal point for this quilt. Sankofa means, “return and get it” and symbolizes the importance of learning from the past. I used batiks I hand stamped in Ghana during trips in 2012 (magenta) and 2014 (black). The Sankofa bird in the center of my quilt reminds me to remember the importance of my heritage as a descendant of enslaved Africans.
