DescriptionThe Tent Colony originated when people came to Ocean Grove in the summer to attend Camp Meetings and return to a simpler way of life. There were few residential structures in the community and families lived in tents among the groves of trees.
As Ocean Grove thrived the tree groves were cut down to make room for permanent structures. As a result many tents in the Tent Colony were dismantled. 114 of the original 600 tents still stand. Today each tent contains a wooden back room with a bathroom, kitchen and sleeping quarters. Some families have owned their tents for six generations.
