DescriptionThis photograph was taken in anticipation of the Egg Harbor City Kiwanis 5-Mile Centennial Run. Ernest Winterbottom is posed in a rather one-sided handshake with Bob Whorwood, of Hamilton, Ontario.
They are standing proudly in front of a sign, which reads "Kiwanis Welcomes you to Egg Harbor City, Home of ... People." The number 4,000 indicates the population of Egg Harbor City. Another sign in the background welcomes potential diners to Alexander's Restaurant.
This image appeared in the July 14, 1955 edition of The News. According to the newspaper, the Egg Harbor City Kiwanis 5-Mile Centennial Run was scheduled to begin in front of the post office at 2:30 pm Saturday, July 16, 1955. Thirty-two runners were entered in the race.
