DescriptionThis photograph shows the first moments of the Egg Harbor City Five Mile Centennial Run on July 16, 1955.
The Centennial Run started at the post office and ended at the point of origin. Participants included local athletes as well as visitors. Notably, runner Browning Ross, winner of Best Overall Time, was a 1952 Olympic Champion as well as one of the best long-distance runners in the United States.
The Five Mile Centennial Run was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Chairman Ernest Winterbottom is clearly visible, waving a flag at far right.
