DescriptionThis is a chart from a study done by Dr. Egerton Elliot Hall of the unequal distribution of employment across races, particularly concerning African Americans and white Americans throughout the 1910s through the early 1930s within New Jersey. During this time many African American migrants from Southern states were moving to the New Jersey area. Through this study Hall explores the effects of the unequal distribution of employment on various aspects of the lives of African Americans such as their health and education. This particular chart is from a report by Helen E. Notis of the Municipal Department of Labor in Newark, New Jersey. It outlines the number of 'Help Wanted' advertisments placed for several days spread throught the month of October in 1932, the number that specified a specific race, and the number of actual placements of African American people versus the number of placements of white people. Many of the 'Help Wanted' advertisements specified the white race and most of the positions were filled by white employees.
