Oaths of identity were usually written on the backs of discharges and used for soldiers retrieving payment from the paymasters as proof that they were who they claimed to be, and entitled to the payment.
Michael McLaughlin was born in New Brunswick, NJ, and made his living as a farmer prior to the war. He was enrolled on September 1st, 1862, for a 9 month term, and was mustered in on September 22nd, 1862. He was mustered out on July 6, 1863.
