DescriptionPortrait of Katsu Awa (Kaishū) (勝安房 (海舟)), best known for having negotiated a relatively peaceful transfer of power from shogun to the emperor in the Meiji Restoration. His son Koroku (小鹿) attended Rutgers Grammar School. He also supported other Japanese students in their endeavor to study abroad. This photograph was included in the letter from Katsu to Griffis dated 1896. Inscription on the back says: "To Sir Griffis / Katsu Awa" in Japanese in Katsu's hand. Griffis's note on the back reads: "He navigated the first Japanese steamer, Kanda [Kanrin] Maru across the Pacific Ocean in 1860 and sent his son to be educated at New Brunswick, N.J., and the Annapolis Naval Academy. Count Katsu, founder of the modern Navy in Japan. He compelled (with British and) the Russians to evacuate the island of Tsushima, in 1861."
