DescriptionLuman J. Shafer attended Rutgers College from 1905 to 1909. Upon graduation he continued his studies at the New Burnswick Theology School and graduated in 1912. After graduating from the Theological School he traveled to Japan as a missionary. Shafer briefly pursued missionary work in Aomori but ultimately settled in Tokyo continuing his missionary work at the School of Theology and the Advanced Studies department of Meiji Gakuin (明治学院). He continued his work in Nagasaki and in 1919 he was appointed the acting rector of Tōzan Gakuin (東山学院). He returned to the United States in 1935 with the new position of the director of the RCA Board of Foreign Missions. At the end of World War II, Shafer was one of the first church officials to return to Japan. Together with other church officials, he led a delegation of Christian churches in America to Japan, meeting with Christian school officials to look over schools and churches devastated by the war. After Shafer returned to the United States, he advocated for a "first-class Christian university" and became the chairman of a committee for the establishment of a Christian university in Japan (International Christian University (国際基督教大学) in Tokyo). His last trip to Japan began on July of 1949. He was appointed president of Ferris University (フェリス女学院大学) in April of 1952 but only served as the president briefly due to his declining health. Shafer returned to the United States in June of 1952 and passed away in January of 1958.
