DescriptionThe Kaigan Church (海岸教会) was the first Japanese Protestant Church founded in Japan in March of 1872. During the new year celebrations of 1872 a group of Japanese students witnessed a meeting held by foreigners where they conducted weekly prayer in a small stone church. The students asked James H. Ballagh if they could have a similar meeting, leading to the founding of the Kaigan Church. The founding included nine baptized members and eleven additional individuals who were baptized by G. Ensor, an Anglican missionary in Nagasaki. The church was originally named Yaso Kōkai (耶蘇公会) and later had the name changed to Yokohama Kaigan Church. During the time of the foundation of Kaigan Church, Ballagh had his own bible class that he encouraged his students to be initiated into the church. Among the students of his bible class were future Japanese Christian leaders. Some of the Christian leaders who emerged from Ballagh's class were Oshikawa Masayoshi (押川方義), Honda Yōitsu (本多庸一), Kumano Yūshichi (熊野雄七), Uemura Masahisa (植村正久), and Yamamoto Hideteru (山本秀煌). Griffis's notes on the back reads: "Reformed church and mission premises. Yokohama. Stands on the Perry Treaty grounds and nearby Perry's little railway telegraph of 'industrial exposition' stood. The Kaigan (Seaside) Church. First Protestant Christian church in Japan. On 'the church lot.'"
