DescriptionA memorial shrine to Nitta Yoshisada (新田義貞) located in Fukui. The original shrine was commissioned by Matsudaira Mochiaki (松平茂昭) and built in 1870 at the site where Nitta Yoshisada's helmet was discovered in 1660. It was named "Fujishima Shrine" (藤島神社) in 1876 and was moved to the present location in 1900. The shrine in the photograph is the one that had been newly built. Griffis's note on the back reads: "New memorial shrine to Nitta Yoshisada. It is approached by a magnificent series of steps, 100 or more, of which only the top [ones] are shown in this picture. My companion under the tree Lieut. Fukuda, a young officer of the 36th regt. of infantry (Fukui ken regiment) who was so severely wounded and crippled at Port Arthur that he had to give up his military career."
NoteIn the early 1900s, William Elliot Griffis obtained a group of mounted albumen photographs of Fukui, which included images of moats, castles, shrines, temples, schools, and street scenes, along with a set of photographs in postcard format and miscellaneous photographs. This item is part of that broader group of early 1900s Fukui visual materials collected by Griffis.
