DescriptionConcepcion Valdes-Munoz emigrated from her native Cuba after the Cuban revolution in 1959. Though she had studied at the University of Havana and been an active lawyer in Cuba, she was forced into underemployment when she first arrived in the United States. After working in a garment factory for a few years she began work in the Cuban Program of the Hudson County Welfare Board, a federally initiated program aimed at helping Cuban refugees. After 10 years, she became the director of the Cuban Program. In this position, she administered the resources allocated to provide emergency financial assistance, job training, employment opportunities, and other services to refugees.
She also became in a group of Cuban lawyers in Hudson County, NJ who helped the newly arrived to get jobs or retrain for working other fields. She became the only female member of this group's board of directors.
