DescriptionWilliam E. Griffis photographed with his students whom he took with him from Fukui when he moved to Tokyo in 1872. Griffis's note on the back reads: "My Fukuwi boys who live with me," and identifies the boys as "1. Carl, my pet. Now Kasahara of Kobe 1917 [Kasahara Kaku? (笠原格)]; 2. Casper or NAKADZAWA [Nakazawa Iwata (中沢岩太)]; 3. Nakano--my assistant in Fukuwi [Nakano Toshio (中野外志男)]; 4. Motoyama (本山), who came from Higo; 5. Ishida [Ishida Ninao (石田 二男雄)]; 6. Yamagata [Yamagata Nakaki (山形仲芸)]."
