DescriptionMatsudaira Tadanari (松平忠礼) came to Rutgers College in 1875 from a Japanese samurai family. He became head of the family after his father's early death. He graduated from Rutgers College in June of 1879 with a degree in the sciences. While visiting him in New Brunswick, his brother Tadaatsu met and married Carrie Sampson, the daughter of a New Brunswick bookseller. Tadanari disowned his brother, who later became the city engineer of Bradford, Pennsylvania, the first man of his nationality to be chosen for civil office in the United States.
