DescriptionHoward Harris was the eleventh male missionary sent to Japan by the RCA. Harris was born in Belleville, New Jersey in 1848, served in the civil war as a flag bearer, graduated from Rutgers in 1873. Immediately after graduating from Rutgers he attended the New Brunswick Theological School and graduated in 1876. He served as a pastor of the Hawthorne Church in New York from 1876 to 1884. In April of 1884 he departed from the United states to engage in missionary and educational work throughout Japan. He arrived in Nagasaki to assist Henry Stout and a year later moved to Tokyo and became a professor at Tokyo Union College and a teacher at Eiwa Preparatory School. After the completion of the merger to Meiji Gakuin (明治学院), he became a professor at the School of General Studies and served as a treasurer. He worked alongside many other missionaries and educations from the United States such as Wyckoff, John Ballagh, and Annie Ballagh (John Ballagh's younger sister).
