DescriptionOne month after the bombing of Fort Sumter, a flag-raising ceremony was held at the campus of Rutgers University. Former U.S. Senator and past president of Rutgers, Theodore Frelinghuysen (1787-1862) presided over the ceremony that was "well attended by over 500 ladies and gentlemen." Speakers included Revs. Forsythe and Bachelder, Professors Cook, Crosby, Wychoff, Smock, and Henshaw. Professor Henshaw received the flag made by "a number of ladies of this City for the students" in the name of the University. The flag was 14' X 22' and hung 40' above the campus. The Hon.Theo.Frelinghuysen spoke to the audience and gave them "an idea of the present crisis."
