Subject
DescriptionReport to the U.S. Secretary of War on the operations by the union armies of the U.S. under the command of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant from the time of his appointment in March, 1864 to the close of the Civil War, April 9,1865. Grant's strategy was to bring continuous operations of all troops in the field throughout all seasons in order to bring the fighting to a close. The troops under Generals Grant and Sherman were used to combat the two armies of the south and gain control of the cities and ports they protected. Though the opposition of the south was inferior, there was vast U. S. territory to control that had a population hostile to the government as well as long lines of communication and supply to protect. This report includes a description of the residual fighting by the armies of the west that ended May 26, 1865.
