DescriptionSoogiwoora Kozo (杉浦弘蔵) was born Hatakeyama Yoshinari (畠山義成) in Kagoshima, Japan. He left Japan under an assumed name and entered Rutgers College in 1867, graduating in 1871. Upon his return to Japan in 1873, he became an officer in the Japanese Government Departments of the Interior, Education and Foreign Affairs, and later became director of Imperial University at Tokyo. This photograph shows him in Western dress.
