A Guide to New Jersey and Other Civil War Manuscripts in the Special Collections and University Archives of Rutgers University. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-4mkq-qs17
DescriptionThe manuscripts described here are of all kinds: letters written by soldiers and by wartime civilians; records of military organizations; soldiers' journals; communications, orders, and reports of military agencies; material of veterans' organizations; some historical writings; papers relating to bounties, pensions, and pay; and sundry miscellany. They tell us much about conditions in the field, and about conditions at home.
The Rutgers manuscript holdings, in Special Collections and Uni versity Archives, are considerable--something over eight million items: papers of persons and families, papers and records of organizations and agencies, numerous single items of all kinds, monographs, and so on.
For the present guide, it has been necessary to search through a great deal to find Civil War papers and records. Some of the searching was done by this compiler, who has known the collection for a number of years. A great deal of it, however, was by Albert C. King, the Special Collections manuscripts librarian. He has been much interested in the project and, over a year or so, laboriously searched for Civil War items and otherwise helped the compiler in numerous ways. To him is owed the compiler's gratitude, and that of this guide's ultimate users.
This compilation, some 880 entries, is divided into two parts. Grouped in Part I are the larger entries and those with considerable quotation of text. Part II contains mostly entries which are descriptive.
