DescriptionGroup photograph of some of the earliest Japanese students studying at Rutgers College and Grammar School. The inscription on the right indicates that the photograph was taken on April 19, 1870, and the inscription on the left reads: "The Japanese students in New Brunswick present this to Prof. & Mrs. [David] Murray." The men in the photograph are identified as Kodama [Kodama Jun'ichirō (児玉淳一郎)], Tsuda [Tsuda Kametarō (津田亀太郎)], Soogiwoora [Sugiura Kōzō (杉浦弘蔵)], Hiasi [Hayashi Gensuke (林玄助)], Katz [Katsu Koroku (勝小鹿)], Takaki [Takaki Saburō (高木三郎)], Hashiguti [Hashiguchi Sōgi (橋口宗儀 )], Maruoka [Maruoka Takerō (丸岡武郎)], Prince Shimats [Shimazu Matanoshin (島津又之進)], and Hirayama [Hirayama Tarō (平山太郎)].
