DescriptionWilliam E. Grffis with his first science class at Kaisei Gakkō (開成学校) in 1872. Griffis's note at the top identifies one of his students as Komura Jutarō (小村寿太郎), or "Baron" and later "Marquess" Komura, the diplomat who in 1905 signed the Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the Russo-Japanese War. On the right margin, he writes that most men have since lived in the United States for one to six years, and "now for the most part, are eminent." At the bottom, he writes: "Japanese Lads in the early 70s who are leading men in New Japan."
