DescriptionYamate (山手), referred to in English as "The Bluff," was the foreigner's residential area from the Bakumatsu to Taisho periods. Initially a foreign settlement for the diplomats, missionaries also began living there and built churches and schools in the area. Ferris Seminary was founded by a Reformed Church missionary, Mary Kidder, in 1870, and the Brown School was opened in 1873 by Samuel R. Brown, both on the Bluff.
