DescriptionMary Kidder left the United States in 1869 and became the first unmarried female missionary to settle in Japan. She was initially hired by the government as an English teacher; however, a year after her arrival in Japan, Kidder founded Ferris Seminary (フェリス女学院), which becomes Japan's first higher learning school for women, located in Yokohama. At Ferris Seminary, students learned about the West including English, history, geography, mathematics, religion, and other skills such as sewing, embroidery. Kidder married a fellow missionary, E. Rothesay Miller. She retired from her position in 1881 and moved to Tokyo. She continued her missionary work from 1888 to 1902 in Morioka until she passed away in June of 1910.
