DescriptionIn 1872, Martin N. Wyckoff, a Rutgers College alumnus, departed to Fukui, Japan to replace William E. Griffis as a teacher at the Fukui junior high school. After the expiration of his Fukui contract in 1874, Wyckoff assumed teaching positions at various schools by the request of the Ministry of Education. He returned to Rutgers College in 1877 for his graduate degree in chemistry and opened a grammar school in Somerville. Wyckoff returned to Japan in 1881 as an RCA missionary and served as a principal at the Senshi School in Yokohama. At the Senshi School, Wyckoff took responsibility of education and administration. He became a professor and board member of Meiji Gakuin when the school merged in 1883 and taught a variety of subjects. Wyckoff passed suddenly due to a heart attack at Meiji Gakuin (明治学院) in January of 1911.
