DescriptionSamuel R. Brown was one of the first three Reformed Church missionaries sent to Japan in 1859. first taught at the Yokohama Academy (Eigakusho, 英学所), a language school for customs officials and their children. Later in 1873, he opened a small private school, known as the "Brown School." The school became one of the origins of Meiji Gakuin (明治学院).
