DescriptionImperial University, known at the time as Kaisei Gakkō (開成学校) (renamed The University of Tokyo in 1877), was established in 1873 as the first institution of higher learning under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Ministry of Education. Hatakeyama Yoshinari (畠山義成; also known as Soogiwoora Kozo, 杉浦弘蔵) served as its first president, and Rutgers alumni, such as William E. Griffis and Edward W. Clark taught here after leaving Fukui and Shizuoka, respectively. David Murray was involved in its development as the Superintendent of the Imperial Ministry of Education. The photograph shows its campus in Kanda, around the time of its inauguration in 1873, before it was moved to Hongō.
