DescriptionRobert M. Brown, the son of Samuel R. Brown, graduated from Rutgers in Spring of 1865 and by November traveled to Japan to take over his father's class of six students. Robert Brown became the third Rutgers alumnus to work in Japan. His arrival to Japan was met with excitement from James Ballagh as he looked forward to having a fellow Rutgers graduate in Japan. Robert temporarily assumed responsibility of his father's accounting work for the mission, where Ballagh deemed his skills questionable. However, he continued to pursue a career in business and politics and remained in Yokohama until 1879. He passed away in Pennsylvania in February 18, 1900, yet his whereabouts between his time in Yokohama and Pennsylvania remain unknown.
