DescriptionThe Kagoshima factory was Japan's first European-style cotton spinning mill powered by steam engines constructed in 1857 by Shimazu Nariakira (島津斉彬), the daimyo of Satsuma domain. Of the factories, the building of the steam ironworks machine shop, completed in 1865, remains and is currently used as the Shoko Shuseikan Museum (尚古集成館). The site of the factory was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 as one of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.
