DescriptionGriffis departed from Japan in 1874, and did not return until in 1926. He returned to Japan as an honored guest with his wife, Frances. At this time he was decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun and was granted an audience with Emperor Showa. His stay in Japan lasted for several months and he also made trips to Korea and Manchuria. He revisited Fukui after fifty four years and also paid his respects to Shungaku (松平春嶽) and Mochiaki (松平茂昭) at the Kaianji Temple (海晏寺) in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Griffis departed from Japan in 1927 before passing in February of 1928.
