DescriptionA view of the moat of Shizuoka (静岡) castle from E. W. Clark's house. Griffis's note reads: "American teacher's home in the corner of Shidzuoka castle."
NoteFrom an album of photographs from Shizuoka, Japan, Views of Shidzuoka (known in Japanese as 静岡風景) compiled in 1873 by Edward Warren Clark (1849-1907), classmate of W. E. Griffis, who taught in Shizuoka from 1871-1873. The album in the W. E. Griffis Collection was given by Clark to Margaret Maggie Griffis in July 1873 as A Souvenir of Shidzuoka. Another album with 24 photographs given to Katsu Kaishū (勝海舟) in 1873 is currently held in the Waseda University Library, Tokyo (https://archive.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kosho/ru04/ru04_04240/ru04_04240.html).
