DescriptionThe old Fukui Castle (福井城) with a view of its moat. Griffis's note on the back reads: "Old castle and moats. Ramparts and towers removed and interior spaces since 1880 given up to mulberry plantations etc. for such worths. Fukui now leads in the habutai [羽二重] (feather-woof) silk manufacture."
NoteIn the early 1900s, William Elliot Griffis obtained a group of mounted albumen photographs of Fukui, which included images of moats, castles, shrines, temples, schools, and street scenes, along with a set of photographs in postcard format and miscellaneous photographs. This item is part of that broader group of early 1900s Fukui visual materials collected by Griffis.
